The main risk factor for the development of BCC is ultraviolet light exposure. Individuals with lighter skin complexion, blond or red hair, light eye color, poor tanning ability (skin type I), and sun-damaged skin are at greatest risk. Although the male-to-female ratio for developing basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is 2:1, women younger than 40 years of age outnumber men in this age group.
